A Piece of Home and Family Leads to Lifelong Happiness
With Moreno Patrick Coleman

Editor in Chief For some people, being happy requires a lot. Being happy can only happen if certain things are in involved, such as money, popularity, dress size, home life, etc. However, according to Moreno Patrick Coleman, a lifelong resident of Merced and now a resident at Anberry Rest Home in Atwater, being happy doesn’t even require half of that. Here you will read about the life of Coleman, and how the little he had made him happy to be who he was. Moreno Patrick Coleman was born in Merced, California in the year of 1949. He lived on a ranch with his 6 brothers and sisters, being the youngest boy he was always picked on, yet always lifted |

up by his siblings no matter what. Being the closest sibling in age to his two younger sisters, he always took care of them. His father was in the military and fought in 9 battles, yet he always came home to his family, telling them the chilling stories prior to

battle. “It was so cold…” he would tell Coleman. “I never want my kids to be cold like that.”
Coleman graduated high school in 1978, and he loved football and baseball. He was always super involved in FFA and agriculture, working in the swine department. Coleman was very successful and won state championships with his swine numerous times. After graduating high school, he got multiple jobs in construction. Moreno Patrick Coleman always said that no matter what he did, he always had to do the best. He always had to work the hardest, and only then would he be satisfied. That’s how his father raised him. “After I turned 40, I had to take care of my niece. She was my world. I had to protect her from that bad crowd, she was beautiful, and there were always some gangbangers trying to be with her.” Coleman states. He had a broken family, |
with his niece’s mother dying of a heroin overdose when she was only 11, Coleman’s family wanted nothing to do with her father. All Coleman had was his niece, and he took care of her until the day she was old enough and okay to see her father again.
Moreno Patrick Coleman enjoys the little things in life. He loves fishing and he loves gardening. “Working in the flower beds is in my blood, hell, I’ve lived on a ranch my whole life and that’s all I need.” There is one piece of advice Coleman says everyone should at least try, to find peace and happiness after a long hard day. “You should go fishing. Go out in the country when the sun is setting and just sit on the bank and relax. It really clears your mind and can find happiness even when you’re alone. It’s good for the soul.”
Moreno Patrick Coleman is one of the happiest people I have seen in a long time. Just the joy brought into his eyes when he talked about his childhood, family and his ranch, it was easily seen that it didn’t take an excessive amount of items or unrealistic facades and wishes to satisfy him. All you need is a little piece of home and a little piece of family. Life sometimes gets in the way and breaks family apart, but don’t lose sight of the ones you have, don’t lose sight of the ones you love. Just because they’re short in number doesn’t mean they’re short in love. Don’t ever take that for granted, some people have nobody. So remember, when you start worrying about your dress size, or your number of followers on Twitter, just remember… don’t lose sight of the little things. It requires less than you think to be happy.
