Thunder Academy, which is ran by the program ASSETS (After School Student Education: Teamwork for Success), is held everyday after school from 2:45 to 6 PM. It gives students a chance to get help on their homework and join several clubs that allows them to have a safe place to stay after school. Many students don’t understand the importance of ASSETS at Buhach, because it is seen as simply an afterschool program that you can stay at and do homework. However, this is not the case, because ASSETS offers a safe place for students to go after school and socialize with their friends.
The man who oversees Thunder Academy, Xavier Gomez, states that “In absence of ASSETS, many of our students would likely end up getting into trouble during ASP hours, according to statistics.” ASSETS has several clubs after school, such as cosmetology, music camp, and cooking club. Although the clubs are a good way to keep the students involved, a large part of ASSETS is its tutoring.
There are several tutors in the library everyday, who are there to help the students in a broad range of subjects. One of the tutors, Angel Sanchez, gives his reasoning for why they enjoy doing what they do. “We’re here to be good role models for the students… we can be here as a support for the students.”
Though ASSETS can be useful for many things, such as clubs and tutoring. Their main goal is to create a safe and active environment for the students after school. “It’s fun and gives us something to do after school,” says freshman Adilene Masopust.
