On February 19 at Buhach Colony High School, students and staff gathered together to support teacher and coach Rich Cometta as he is getting prepared to go have radiation on a tumor that is attached to his brain stem. Though it isn’t cancer, it is still always dangerous to have any sort of growth by the brain. This has happened to him awhile ago, but he had surgery to remove the tumor. This time, he is going to have a three day radiation treatment. Cometta is not just a teacher, but an integral part to Buhach Colony.
Through all he does, Rich Cometta has proven to be a very dedicated member of the Thunder Family. He has been at Buhach since before it opened. He even helped design the floor plan of the school. Not only is he a math and engineering teacher, he is also the coach for the golf team. He is an announcer at almost all the sport events. All in all, Cometta is very dedicated to the students of BC. Long time colleague Scott Wine (BC Activities Director) says that Cometta is a big part of Buhach. “He is such a good friend to everybody, and an important part of not only the school, but he is an important part of everyone’s lives.”
BC Principal Steve Hobbs is the one who started the campaign “#Richwillwin”. All staff was wearing a shirt that had the Thunder logo and the hashtag on it to support Cometta. There was also a surprise rally for Cometta and his wife. As the two walked into the gym, they were greeted with all the staff lined up as a tunnel, and the students of BC chanting “#Richwillwin!” Cometta is not one who likes being the center of attention (unless he is on the microphone). Before the rally, Hobbs stated that he, “...wants the rally to be a celebration. I know when you go through something, like he’s getting ready to go through, you don’t know how your body is going to react. We just want both him and Mrs. Cometta to know that the Thunder Family is here to support them, and that we are here for whatever they need.”
At the end of the rally, the Comettas were both struck with joy and tears at all that had just happened. “It’s a wonderful place,” Cometta explains. “Take advantage of everything you got, while you have it here. Make friendships. Make relationships. That’s what matter’s.” Rich Cometta’s absence is going to leave a large impact on the school. Two weeks may not seem like a long time, but it will be enough for all to realize that there is something missing from the spirit of the school. #Richwillwin is more that just a hashtag. It is saying that no matter what, Rich Cometta will win, because his family and friends here at Buhach Colony High School are supporting him all the way.
