Writer Buhach Colony has amazing students, and among them is junior Jagandeep Mokha. He has over 700 community service hours! Normally students go for 250 to get the community service cord for graduation but Mokha is going above and beyond. All this community service on his record holds great things for him in the future. Jagandeep started his volunteer work his freshman year in 2014 and he has not stopped since. He gets his hours from volunteering at a couple of different places including elementary schools(As a tutor) and Mercy Medical. It is not the amount of hours he accumulates that matters, but also the impact that the community service has. Mokha states,”I think community service is important because, community service enables a person to make an impact in the community. From this impact hopefully, some change can occur to help create a better community. Maybe it can even inspire other to help out and be a factor in their community.” This is one of the |
reasons that he has gone above and beyond the normal 250 hours. He elaborates why he feels going beyond is important by saying that it opens up opportunities, it is great to meet new people, and it has an impact on the community. Mokha mentions that he feels community service is very helpful because it is like a free trial sort of thing where you can meet everyday people and interact with the community. Junior Paana Zamani says, “I think that it is good he is doing so much, I don’t think I could do it, so it’s really good.”
Not only does community service benefit the people receiving the service, but it benefits the person giving. There are health benefits to volunteering such as mood and immune system improvement. Another benefit is that it can help a person to gain experience, even in things that might be related to a person's career interest. It always looks good on applications and resumes, but additionally it also strengthens the community and brings people together. When a person put themselves out there they have the chance to influence and inspire people and touch their lives even if it may be a little. Students like Jagandeep that get directly involved and take action show that they have the drive and determination to help others. This shows great character and compassion which is just what this world needs.
