Oh to be a wrestler…countless hours spent in a dark, stinky, wrestling room. Mano a mano, swapping sweat, all while trying to avoid cauliflower ear. The sacrifice that this year’s BC wrestlers have made is paying off in spades.
Just how good is this year’s group? They dismantled the Merced Bears 78-0 and had fans shaking their heads at the speed of the match. Then on senior night, they held off perennial powerhouse Pitman 30-27 to inch that much closer to a league championship. Leem Kue (106 pounds), Brandon Mendoza (120) and Juan Rosales (182) all scored pins to lead the thunder to the big victory.
Will Schwertscharf (132), Salvador Sanchez(195), Ben Moran (160), Steven Inocencio (220) all wrestled well. Junior Titus Sanchez avoided a pin to seal the deal and send the Buhach sideline into hysterics.
Coach Eric Osmer spoke of this year’s team and the Buhach/Atwater wrestling rivalry. “Our cross town rivals are also our brothers. Our relationship isn't as adversarial as it is one born from mutual respect. In our sport, the athletes and coaches all know how hard we have to work just to be prepared to step on the mat. In the case of the young Atwater program, they will be prepared to do battle with Buhach. They will be coached well and will come at us with every bit of competitive spirit that we will have. We will not underestimate them, we will be prepared and ready to wrestle. When the final match is wrestled, we fully expect to win the dual, but we will then show our respect to our brothers as they will show there respect for us. "Fate whispers to the warrior, "You can not withstand the storm." The Thunder warrior whispers back, "I am the storm."
The regular season will come to a climactic conclusion this coming Tuesday against rival Atwater. Let’s pack their house with Black and Gold adorned lunatic fans and help this year’s thunder wrestling team bring home the hardware.
