The Buhach Colony wrestling team handed Atwater a 69-9 shellacking to secure its first CCC crown since 2007. Like a Ferrari going up against a Prius, Tuesday night was no contest. BC won 12 of 14 matches with 11 of those wins coming because on a pin. Coach Eric Osmer gushed with pride for his team and their efforts.
The win was really a team effort. Freshman standout Kyle Downs filled in at Varsity and not only defeated the #2 106 pounder in the league, but pinned him. Salvador Sanchez at 195 also pinned his Falcon, but did it while being extremely ill. He really came through for the team by wrestling even though he was not at 100%. A real team player. Noah Hall stepped it up for the team at 140 and got a pin for the team. Keelan "Bucky" Buckner came through with a pin against his rival. His Falcon rival won their last match. Everyone else did their job.
This win and this Championship did not just occur over night or even this season. This group of Athletes worked hard all year round. We train and hone our skills in the off season, in the Spring, the Summer and in the Fall. We lift all year round. We compete in the Olympic styles of Freestyle and Greco Roman in the Spring. In the Summer we lift and practice and attend weekly match nights with other local teams. We attend team camps. The guys that won this Championship always have always been committed, dedicated, loyal and have always been young men of their word. They never quit and they never gave up. I have always told them that our sport does the most work for the least amount of recognition, so we have to do it for the love of the sport.
On Saturday, February 6th, the Thunder will travel to Lincoln High School of Stockton to compete in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Team Dual Tournament where we will compete against all the other Division 1 league Champions in our Section. Should be a great, tough and exciting day of competition. We have been to this tournament 3 times over the years and have won it 2 times. We would love nothing more than to put a 3rd championship banner next to our other 2 in Thunderdome. (the gym)
