Friday, January 22nd was the cross town rivalry basketball game, the Thunder against the Falcons. The game started at 7:15 p.m. in the Atwater High School gym. Buhach (2-2) and Atwater (1-3), both were expecting a great game with roaring spirit sections for support to cheer them on throughout the game. Senior Salah Sweeleh stated, “If we play together, I think we will take a W.” The team is capable of playing together and have a lot of talent. Senior Darius Mack stated, “If we play smart and finish strong just like we did the first two games we’ll get that W. This team is way too talented to be taking L’s.” On the other hand, Coach Bliss stated, “Anytime you have a rivalry game in two teams like Atwater and Buhach, it makes it a fun environment for the players and spectators.” Bliss’s last words were, “The guys work hard and are looking forward to the opportunity, and they always play well against our rival.” After all, it was a back and forth game, very intense, and a great game!
With 6 seconds left, Atwater up 46 to 43. senior Jaswinder Bidwal decided to go for a three pointer. Everyone with their mouth wide-opened watched slowly as the ball went in and all you heard was Buhach’s student section roaring out loud. With 3 seconds left, Bidwal tied the game and sent it to overtime. Bidwal stated, “There was only 6 seconds left and as I caught the ball, I saw the time and I knew I had to take the shot. It was pretty ecstatic and I knew it pushed the game into overtime, I knew we got them. It was a tough game, both teams worked hard, but there’s always a loser and a winner.” Buhach (3-2) ended up beating their cross town rival, Atwater(1-4) with a final score of 55-51.
2012 BC graduate Aaron Cochran was the first ever to make a triple double and Bidwal was known as the second to accomplish it. Bidwal accomplished it with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals. Bidwal stated, “It gives us great momentum beating Atwater High and going to our next game at the Thunder Dome against Golden Valley.”
