Every year, Students are recruited from Buhach Colony High School to be camp counselors for combined Schaffer and Bellevue 6th grade camp. Being a camp counselor comes with a lot of responsibilities and challenges that you would never expect. Three seniors sat down and confessed what it was like for them and if they would ever recommend this experience for future seniors and juniors. If being a camp counselor has ever interested you but you could never make up your mind, maybe the information below can help you out.
Senior Mary Loera
What was the hardest thing about being a camp counselor? The hardest thing would be putting your foot down because you have to scold them and put them in their place so that they respect you. What was the easiest thing about being a camp counselor? Enthusiasm because there is a lot of activities that require it because everyone was so high energy about all the snow that we got over night While you were gone, was there ever a time that you regretted being a camp counselor? The middle of the night because they have to tell you if they need to go to the bathroom because we have to walk them to the bathroom so then we could get woken up around five times at night. Would you recommend being a camp counselor for future juniors and seniors? Yes I would even though it was difficult with all the snow, it was still fun and the food is really good. |

Did you have any trouble with the kids listening to you? I personally did not have any problems. I was able to choose my partner for the cabin. It was both of our second times at camp, so we sort of new what to expect with the kids. We were able to set boundaries early on and have a good time. Did you ever have any free time or were you always busy? The first day and the last day were extremely busy. The entire schedule was pretty packed, in order to keep the kids busy. We actually did have breaks during the second and third days. We were given 2 hours to do whatever we wanted to. That time could be used to shower, hike, do homework, etc. Did camp counseling ever become too much for you? This year went pretty great. It ran really smoothly beyond the heavy snow. It never became too much for me. In fact, it was much easier than the previous year. Would you recommend being a camp counselor for future juniors and seniors? I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about it. It is a great leadership experience. If you enjoy working with kids ,it works out perfectly. You gain community service hours for doing something that is really enjoyable, it is not like other work where it feels like work. You actually enjoy yourself and learn new things about yourself, and your leadership skills. |

Did the kids ever become to much to handle? Nah, my kids were great. It really helped that they all were friends and were willing to work with myself and my partner Mary with the rules and such. Was camp counseling everything you expected it to be, or was it completely different than you expected? I was also a camp counselor last year so it was very similar. The only difference was how much snow was up there. That made it kind of difficult with the kids staying dry and not feeling homesick but in the end it worked out and it was a lot of fun. What was the worst part about being a camp counselor? You miss your own bed. The beds up there are very uncomfortable but it is all temporary, the perks outweigh the negatives for sure. Would you recommend being a camp counselor for future juniors and seniors? Heck yeah! Great leadership opportunity and tons of fun especially if you and your friends sign up together! |
