Here on campus there are a variety clubs, one not very well known and that deserves recognition is Debate Club. Not many people know of, or what debate is. English teacher Kris Freitas stated, “The Buhach debate team is a collection of students who desire to develop and perfect their speaking skills.” This particular club participates in monthly tournaments as members of the Yosemite forensics league in two events, which are debate and speech. These students prepare and work towards a individual goal and a team achievement.
Debate club has competed in two tournaments so far. Junior Paige Stapleton finished second in speaking B division and first in Lincoln Douglas debate B division. Another great achievement in debate club was Senior Juan Perez finishing first in Humorous Interpretation B division. Though that may sound funny, it also takes a lot of time and preparation to be ready for the speeches. Followed by those two wins are many more with almost everyone in the club with a win. Not only is the winning feeling a plus in debate club but also the atmosphere of debate meetings and tournaments. It is not like any other club on campus, the meetings are fun group hangouts. The kids get along and have fun with what they do. Often times there is snacks or food stops for the tournaments and let’s be honest, that's always a blast. Debate has aftereffects as well, it does not only influence your high school career but also college. Yes, colleges look at clubs and debate club is like a shiny diamond on the application. It looks great on college applications and can be that extra little something to get your in.
President of Debate Club junior Alyssa Conroy states “Our team really has the dynamic of a family. We all feel comfortable around each other and help each other prepare for competition.” This just goes to show that there is a place you could go and talk to people who will accept you. Debate club members are normal people at BC just like you, so there's nothing to lose by trying it out. Competitions may frighten you like many others but there is nothing to fret.
Debate has picked up a strength in one section of competition in particular, impromptu speaking. Conroy states just a little bit about impromptu, “Impromptu is an event where you have 2 minutes to prepare a 5 minute speech. It's really impressive that so many people on our team are excelling at this.” It may seem simple to just talk for 5 minutes or debate with another group but it goes way deeper than that.
Debate’s hard work and partnership shows through their achievements, Conroy finishes it off with “Aside from competition, our greatest strength is probably the ability to support each other. Practices are spent helping each other better ourselves improve.” Nothing about debate is scary if you actually know what debate really is. Go ahead, check it out and debate on whether or not debate is for you.
