Have you ever wanted to join in on helping your community? What about gaining those community service hours that look so great on college applications?
Students have been asked and are now expected to participate in bettering their community to the best of their abilities. However, not all students know what types of community service options are out there. As Junior Maya Pena states, “What’s preventing me from performing community service is the fact that I don't know which places I’m allowed to do this type of stuff.” This seems to be a valid point for many students who are looking for a place to perform their hours.
One thing students should know, is that there are many different community service opportunities. Some include volunteering at a facility, cleaning up around the community, and simply helping others out with their work.
On the BCHS campus, there are three clubs that are based on community service: Community Counts, Interact Club, and Mr. WERC. The clubs also provide a way for students to meet new people from their school. Advisor of Community Counts Angelica Zarate claims, “They [the clubs] are a great opportunity to earn community service hours while learning leadership skills, making new friends, and making a difference.” All three of these clubs would provide students with a great opportunity to perform their community service while also being involved with their school.
If students are prone to wanting to make environments more enjoyable for everyone involved, these clubs are also great chances to do so. As senior Sabrina Thao, President of Community Counts Club, states, “The clubs are about helping our community and making it a better place.”
The BCHS campus has provided its students with easy access to community service opportunities, all that’s left to do is to have the students ask around and join these clubs. If students become interested in these clubs, they can see Mrs. Tanzillo in the office about them for more information.
