The Election Convention has been an event at Buhach Colony for several years. AP Government teacher John Bliss and Leadership teacher Kate Zamarripa have organized and arranged the plans for this event and it all comes down to basics. Mr. Bliss states, “There is nothing, to me, hard about organizing this convention. It's just fun! And I love the enthusiasm that the students have to get involved in this event, it makes the election convention that much better.”
The election convention is run by an operation of students from leadership and student delegates who volunteer for their English and History classes to represent a certain state. This convention revolves around the campaigns of ASB candidates who are running for positions next year. To begin, the election convention starts with the speeches of a group of candidates running for one |
position. After each of their speeches, there is an opening question period for the delegates to ask their questions relating to the ideas and future performance of these candidates. Once each candidate of a position has finished their speech and answered their questions, there is a 5 minute caucus where all the delegates of their states discuss and chose the most proper and best fitting candidate for the position. Each lead delegate will then stand and speak for their state in announcing their votes for each candidate. The winner is then calculated immediately after voting. The process moves on to the next position of office and the next group of candidates, where a winner awaits again. After every candidate has given their speech, voting time comes at the very end and the ASB President, along with the rest of the ASB postions, are finally selected.

hard to set up this event and are proud with how it turned out. “The hardest part for me was that I've never set up an election convention so I didn't know how it was supposed to look! But it was really great seeing it all come together and seeing the students embrace and enjoy it.” Zamarripa states. The election convention was hosted by current ASB President senior Harrison Hobbs; he states, “I really like helping decide for the positions of office with the delegates, I love being a part of things that make this school great.”
