Coming back from the dust, Journalism has made it's comeback. The last time this course was offered was in 2010. It is now an elective that will be offered the 2016-2017 school year here at Buhach. This elective is amazing for all kinds of minds, whether you're into creative writing or you just like to gossip, journalism does it all. As a team, the journalism staff works together to get the hard news to the students and staff. We will always keep you updated on what you need to know.
Let's taking a dive in the life of journalism staff members. There are multiple positions that students may obtain. The position of editor in chief is for the student that shows great leadership skills. The student obtaining this position has to have great organization skills to keep all publishings, story checks, and all other sections in line. This is a big leadership role and involves communicating with the journalism staff members to create masterpiece stories. The editor in chief will highly be relied on for due dates, help, and any other needs the staff members may have. The editor in chief , along with all staff members, is expected to write stories and contribute to the website.
Web page editor and news editor, senior Leeana Richardson, has the duties of publishing all of the ready stories to the Journalism website. This is a tech-savvy job due to the involvement with the website. This job is easily obtained by someone who is not very familiar to technology if they are willing to devote time to learning. Along with web editor, Richardson also proofreads news stories on the check days and writes her own assigned stories as well. Richardsen states this about her experience in journalism, “You get to meet different people that you've never met before and through that your are able to work better together.”
A couple of other editors are senior Rosa Duarte in features and senior Lorna Soto in opinions. Just like the other editors, Soto and Duarte correct and proofread their section stories. They carefully look for errors or ways of improvement. They do this all in the time of writing their own stories as well. Along with opinions editor, Soto is also in charge of advertising This involves collecting money and ad contracts form the staff to raise money for other activities that the class may want to do. This year these activities included class shirts and class lunches. Soto states, “I love journalism and it is the class I look forward too going to. We are all just like a family in that class.” This is just one of the perks of working with such a diverse group all year long.
One of the most hands on job would be photo editor. Senior Jenna Leon currently holds the position and she attends many of the events here at buhach to capture the breathtaking moments on camera. Although she takes photos she is not the only one allowed to check out a camera for an event. If your prefer to take your own photos for your article, that is allowed. After the photo is taken, Leon then approves and edits it for publishing.
Clearly media is a big hit with teens so we have a job for that too. Senior Miriam Sanchez has control of the twitter account to spread news about stories being published on the website. This job is more of an outgoing and connecting job. You interact with people and get the students and staff involved with what journalism is doing. Along with those duties, Sanchez handles little jobs around the class including grading and organizing things for the class. " Your task to become a Beet Sheet person is to grade your classmates ideas, which is really interesting because you get to read and understand people's humor and the great topics they came up with." Sanchez states about her job as beet sheet grader.
If you aren't the type to take on a big role, we always need writers. Currently senior Adrian Cisneros, senior Kendal Bricky, and senior Haley Locken obtain the roles as writers. They solely focus on writing stories and, if needed, step up to proofread stories as well. These members are very needed, of course, to be able to cover all the stories needed. All members of journalism write stories of their choosing so that way all efforts are put into writing stories for the best possible outcome.
Through digging for dirt and finding the hard stories, you can create an amazing bond with not only your fellow journalism staff members, but also everyone that your encounter when you go out and talk to people. This class is more than a writing class, it is an outlet for students to write about what they are passionate about and provide something great for the students and staff to be entertained by. This class can became a part of your schedule if you talk to you councilor about the details. The 2016-2017 journalism will be an exciting year with fresh new faces, so became a part of the staff and leave an unforgettable mark on your school.
