Buhach Colony junior Kole Joaquim is the leader of the cross country varsity team. Running since he was ten years old, Joaquim was chosen by head cross country coach Alfonsno Garcia for athlete of the month. This being his third year running cross country for Garcia, Joaquim is known to be the fastest male runner on the cross country team.
Who inspired you to run cross country in high school?
Garcia inspired me because I ran for him freshmen year in track and he said I was a fast runner so I decided to run for him for cross country.
Why do you think your coach chose you for athlete of the month?
I think I was chosen because I feel like I inspire my team and I show great leadership skills.
Do you hope to run cross country in college?
I’ve been thinking about it, but if I do I don’t know where I would be going.
How do you get ready for a race mentally?
I listen to music and relax. I try my hardest not to think about the pain.
What’s the hardest part of running?
The pain. It makes you think to yourself, ‘Why am I doing this?’
What are your goals for this season?
To push varsity to do our best. We should have a great next two years, and I just want to make sure we do whatever we can do to have a great season.
