Have you ever wondered about what happened at Buhach before you were here? Like who chose the name, who chose the mascot, why it was built , or who the first principal was? Don't wonder any longer! Originally the land Buhach Colony High School was built on was known as the Buhach Plantation. Our school retained the name of this plantation out of respect for immigrants that settled here in the year of 1871. It also has been rumored that Buhach was built on a farm that happened to have an extraordinary amount of ant colonies. The people from the farms tried to do everything to exterminate the ants but nothing would work. Then they came across a bug repellent named Buhach. Yes you read that right.
Buhach started off with 772 freshman and sophomores with no juniors or seniors. In its entirety Buhach was a whopping of 27 million dollar school, Buhach first principal was Ernie Sopp.
We are the only school in Merced county that doesn't have an animal or a person as our mascot. The reason for this is because the student body officers couldn't choose an animal or a human so what happened was one of our fellow teachers Mr.Cometta chose thunder, but that begs the question, where did Thor come from? Thor actually came into Buhach 3 years after the school opened, the school board thought it was strange that thunder was the mascot so they chose Thor, the god of thunder, to make up for it.
You might wonder why Buhach was made if Merced and Atwater already existed; all the schools were really packed so they decided to make a new school and thus Buhach was born It's quite fascinating to learn about the background of our school and how its legacy continues to this day.
