Spanish Teacher Leticia Mendoza is a great spanish teacher at Buhach Colony High School. Mendoza is in fact so great that principal Steve Hobbs decided she should be recognized for her excellence and be chosen for teacher of the month.Hobbs said, “She is outstanding in the classroom and her students have respect for her and the way she teaches. She works hard and is involved with students, and she makes learning fun.” These are the reasons she was chosen. She was interviewed and her answers to the questions were just as good as her teaching skills.
Why do you think you were chosen for teacher of the month?
I feel I have a commitment to the student’s, I truly enjoy being with them, and I love whenever I see that I make a difference in the students lives. Especially when I see that I can expand their horizons and give them more appreciation for the latino culture. I feel that I still have the passion for teaching.
Do you bring anything new to teaching?
I feel that yes, teaching a language is very different than teaching the native language, and I have to bring new strategies, new ideas. I have very high standards for learning a new language and I pass it on to my colleagues in the department.
When did you first decide to be a spanish teacher?
When I started college I wanted to be a surgeon. I visited medical universities and I was excited. Then a friend invited me to work with migrant students and I just fell in love with them. I decided to switch my career path.
Why is it important for kids to learn spanish?
It is important for anybody to be bilingual. It expands your communication skills. Your knowledge about people is twice as much. And when somebody learns a different language or culture we can appreciate our own more.
If you could chose any other career what would it be?
Medicine, it’s exciting to save lives. Make a difference in a different way.
Would you rather travel to the future or go back to the past?
I would travel to the future, because I would want to see how the future would be and to evaluate the present day and make a change if I need to.
