Jessica Sweet is the new Agriculture Student teacher at Buhach Colony High School. Sweet grew up in Livermore, Ca on a cow-calf operation that went through local 4-H and FFA chapters. She volunteers in spare time for the California Cattlewomen’s Association and California Women for Agriculture. An interesting fact is that she served as a National Beef Ambassador in 2010 for the American National Cattlewomen’s Association. Sweet spent an exhausting summer selling fruit at farmer’s markets up and down the state.
Where did you go to college? What did you like about the school?
I then traveled to Modesto Junior College to begin my education where I earned A.S. in Agriculture Sales and Service and Agricultural Sciences. I then transferred to Fresno State where I earned a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education and am currently completing my teaching credential. I loved agriculture and all the hands on experiences that I had because of it and I also love english because reading is one of my favorite past times.
If you could pick anywhere to teach, where would it be and why?
I would teach right here in the Valley. Coming from the Bay Area, I love the deep ties to community and the people here compared to where I am originally from.
What can you say about the Buhach staff and students here?
I have only been here for a week and I have already been welcomed with open arms and have loved how nice and accommodating everyone has been.
Since you're an FFA student teacher, is this what you want to teach or not? If not what subject, grade and why?
I love teaching so many different things, I have always loved teaching agriculture business because I think business is not only interesting but can be fun to learn about or be involved in. I also love teaching science classes and having the opportunity to make them fun.
Most embarrassing moment?
I was presenting at the New York State Fair in front of hundreds of people and completely forgot what I was talking about and ended up burning myself on the stove we were using for a beef cooking demonstration. I recovered quickly, but was a little afraid of the stove during the next demonstration.
