Prom has been cancelled for spring since funds have been depleted after last year’s San Francisco trip. This leaves no room to spend money towards prom this year. However, this is not the only reason that prom is being cancelled for the 2017 school year. Too many students have obligations which is another major concern. Due to the lack of students who would be able to attend, prom will be cancelled all-together to allow for the funds to replenish.
Principal Lance Morrow says about the news, “Unfortunately prom just won’t be able to happen this year. We are in such an economic hole that we need to cancel something to dig our way back out.” Buhach is in too much of an economic crisis to be able to accommodate all of the students at Buhach. When told that prom was canceled, Senior Nathanael Ramirez said, “What?! I can’t believe it. I’ve been waiting for this event all year. It was going to be one of the highlights of my year!” As tears rolled down Ramirez’ face you could tell the disappointment he had with the news.
Prom has been a tradition for high schools for years and cancelling this prom will deprive the students of this tradition. When asked about how this will affect the students, associate principal Marcus Knott says, “Yes this is very unfortunate and we’re hoping that the students will be very understanding of our student problem and money situation. Hopefully we can find some way to make up for the predicament we are in that will be a compromise for both the school and the students.” Changes may be upon Buhach as we look to fix this hole we are in. Unfortunately, the first change will be the cancellation of prom.
All is not lost though. Due to prom being cancelled, the little Atwater carnival that mysteriously appears in the Commerce parking lot near Super Target and Walmart every few months has decided to lend its strength. They have partnered up with FFA to bring you a new and exciting experience. While you enjoy the rides and attractions you can also enlist in the hog-riding races to try and compete to be the first ever champ. However, it doesn’t just stop there. As the night goes on and the stomach begins to rumble, you can enjoy the tasty nachos from our very own nacho bar. This is definitely an event you will not want to miss. Oh and by the way, April Fools!
