This month, there is a different kind of recognition, one that’s just as valuable, if not more, than the Most Valuable Player player or Athlete of the week. This is one of the most important kind of people you could ever have on a team. A team player. Somebody that puts the team’s needs before their own. Someone that supports their team, leads and inspires them in times where they need it most. Coach Shane Gentry was honored to bestow the Team Player of the Month to senior athlete Skyler Coffey.
“Skyler is very consistent with his approach to practices and games. He is a hard worker, and his work is paying off. He is one of our leading scorer and rebounder.” Coach Gentry states. Gentry also has said that even though Coffey isn’t very loud or vocal, his actions speak much louder and spread like an epidemic. “Skyler is a leader in the way he practices. He does not say much, but he doesn't need to. Other players see this and feed |
off of it. Skyler's work ethic has become contagious and has started to spread throughout the team” states Coach Gentry. A player with a strong work ethic and mindset are the soul and solid foundation of the team and inspires the team’s drive as well. Without someone leading the team in the right direction, the team can never get better, and they can never perform at their highest peaks. And that’s what Skyler Coffey brings to the table, or in this case, the basketball court!
“Skyler is truly a team player first. I believe his number one concern is the success of the team!”

How does it feel to be elected as Team Player of the Month?
“It’s a true honor to be named team player and it feels like all the hard work I put in the off season is finally starting to pay off.” How do you think Team Player differs from MVP? “Team player is different from MVP because a team player is more focused on what he or she needs to do for his or her team to be successful, as an MVP is someone who is probably the most talented but doesn’t always contribute as much as a team player to the team.” What do you do to get pumped up on game day? “On game days to get pumped up before I walk in the gym I sit in my car blasting music, mainly songs by Drake.” Do you think you and your team will make it into playoffs? “I definitely believe my team and I have potential to make playoffs, it’s going to take a major turn around but I have full confidence that we can do it!” |
