Jenny Zaragoza and Jessica Pinasco console Emma Seifert as their hopes are dashed, only to be told later that their season will continue.
The girl’s volleyball team travelled to Christian Brothers in Sacramento last Tuesday but were defeated in three sets. The reality that their dream season was over, and for the seniors, the cold truth that they would never again wear the black and gold hit like a ton of bricks. Tears flowed freely, like the Merced river after the rain. Hugs were given as the girls forlornly walked back to the Via bus, heads down and defeated.
As the bus traveled south back down the 99, a strange thing happened. Senior Emma Seifert was reading Shawn Jansen’s Sun-Star article on her phone when she came across these words.
The Thunder’s season isn’t over. Advancing to the semifinals qualified Buhach Colony for the NorCal playoffs, but after losing in the semifinals, the Thunder will face a tough
first-round opponent next week.
“At first, I was just confused, I kept reading the text over and over to myself, said Siefert. I showed the article to my coach who then texted Jansen. Jansen then assured Volleyball coach Andy Hill that their season was indeed not over. Cheers erupted in the bus and pandemonium ensued. What was just moments before reminiscent of a morgue, was now a New Year’s party on Red Bull.
Seifert's first emotion was anger as she recalled, “I cried for nothing? Are you serious?” Senior Jenny “Jay-Z” Zaragoza was plenty amused by her teammate. “The way she reacted was absolutely hilarious” stated Zaragoza. As the commotion died down, Coach Hill noticed Senior Captain Jessica Pinasco hunkered down in the back of the bus with her headphones still on. Hill asked Pinasco, “What are you doing back here so sad?” to which Pinasco replied, Are you kidding? I’m mad because our season is over. What do think?” An awkward pause followed until Coach Hill said, “Didn’t you hear all the yelling?” Once again, the emotions of sadness turned to elation.
So the volleyball season is not over, and the dreams of the girls are still alive. Win or lose from here on out, this will be a season that the girls will never forget.
